Sanskrit & Tamil Spiritual Names & MeaningsTulasiTulasi is the name of a fragrant herb held in great veneration by the Hindus. It is Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) and is said to have been created by Lord Vishnu from the churning milk ocean to help humanity. It is held sacred by Hindus and is regarded as an incarnation of Mahalakshmi. (see Prema Shakti June 2000 for more about the traditional uses and legends surrounding Tulasi). Once Lord Krishna wanted to show the world the greatness of devotion. At that time there was someone called Satyabhama whose believed wealth could buy anything. So Lord Krishna set about proving to him that in reality devotion stands far above all wealth. Lord Krishna had a scale brought and sat on one side. Then he asked Satyabhama to balance it. He put all his wealth and jewelry on the scale. When that was not enough to tip the balance, he asked for more wealth and placed that on the scale too. However it did not tip the scale. Finally Lord Krishna called His wife Rukmani to balance the scale. She was very humble and she plucked a leaf from the Tulasi plant with great devotion and put it on the other side of the scale, praying to Lord Krishna. Immediately and to everyone's surprise, the scale tipped over to the other side, showing the sacredness of the Tulasi plant and the 'weight' of pure devotion. There are many varieties of the Tulasi plant called Shiva Tulasi, Small Tulasi, White Tulasi, Vishnu Tulasi, Big Tulasi, Black Tulasi, Earth Tulasi,… In India, Hindus believe that if you plant Tulasi around your house, you will be protected from bad energies entering. Today this herb still plays a very important role in healing many diseases. Literally Tulasi also means 'matchless'. This refers to the story
of Tulasi who was the daughter of King Dharmadhvaja and Queen Madhavi.
She was a great devotee of Mahavishnu and prayed for many thousands
of years to obtain Mahavishnu as her husband. Eventually she ascended
to Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu's celestial home, with Mahavishnu.
