Sanskrit & Tamil Spiritual Names & Meanings

Janaki

Janaki is another name for Sita, consort of Rama. She is called Janaki because She was the daughter of King Janaka. Even though Janaki's father was a great king who lived surrounded by the opulent comforts of a palace, he was a well-known enlightened soul who helped many spiritual aspirants to attain self-realization. Janaki was raised by King Janaka and was taught the highest spiritual virtues from a young age. She was the embodiment of the Divine Mother. Someone with this name should develop the qualities of Janaki, of which the most prominent were bravery, absolute loyalty to Her highest ideal - God, perfect surrender to the Divine and infinite patience. It was because She possessed all these qualities, that She could withstand all the difficulties in Her life.

When the time came for Janaki to choose a husband, King Janaka let it be known that he would give his daughter's hand in marriage to anyone who could string the giant bow of Lord Shiva. All the best men came, but they could not even manage to lift the bow. When Rama entered the court, He not only lifted the bow, but as He strung it, the bow broke in two. It was clear that this was the marriage willed by a higher divine law and thus, Janaki and Rama became husband and wife.
